Mission

The wood orphan is a company that rescues wooden furniture from yard sales, road side finds and in the attics of friends and family and gives the furniture new life and purpose.  It is the mission of the Wood Orphan to repurpose  (or as we used to say recycle) wooden furniture in a manner that not only salvages the piece of furniture but recreates it as a piece of original functional art for your home.

Philosophy

At the wood orphan's studio, we believe that all furniture, regardless of the bumps and scratches that have occurred over time can be repaired and refinished and given a new life and new memories.  Furniture, much like us, over the years gets bumped, scratched and sometimes broken.   Often this once treasured furniture ends up at yard sales, curb side and in land fills.  At the Wood Orphan, we believe that no furniture needs to clutter our land fills and most furniture , with a lot of elbow grease, sanding, and some glue can be restored to its original function.   The pieces are often taken apart and if necessary repaired and stripped down to the bare wood.   There are certain pieces in which some of the bumps and dents are left on the piece.  I call this the character of the piece and in some furniture the character is lost if all of the bumps are sanded away.  All attempts are also made to keep the original furniture builders label on the piece.

After the preparation of the piece is completed I then allow my creative juices to flow over the piece with acrylic paints to create a one of a kind functional piece of art.  Functional art, in that the furniture can be used in your home while adding color, character and creativity to your home.  This once discarded piece of furniture has regained its purpose in your home, ready for the memories that come with a treasured piece of functional art.
